The property’s site is enviable. It is central to Dixon Park, Bar and Merewether beaches, as well as The Junction shopping centre.
Owners Bonnie and Tony Young bought the site in 2000 from well-known Newcastle business couple the Frascas. The Youngs lived in the-then cottage for a few years while they deliberated whether to build townhouses or a single house on the land.
With a growing family (they now have five children) the couple decided on one house. They engaged local award-winning architect Rod Seymour to design the property, which was finished in 2012.
Bonnie said the house had served her big family well. Her husband grew up surfing the Newcastle coast, so Merewether was the perfect beachside address, she said.
The property was designed with family living in mind. Entertaining and accommodating guests was also a priority.
An open floor-plan brings the big kitchen, dining and family rooms together in a large space perfect for socialising.
The kitchen has Miele appliances, a built-in coffee machine, a five-burner gas oven and a dishwasher.
The three bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling tiles, double vanities and frameless shower screens. Three of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, giving the option of creating separate guest accommodation or for setting up a home office.
Outside there is a mosaic plunge pool, which was inspired by a family trip to Bali, and covered entertaining areas.
The parking situation is also expansive, with a true four-car garage. The garage’s 2.4metre-high western cedar doors allow for most caravans, small boats and large four-wheel-drives to be accommodated.
The property has ducted air-conditioning and vacuum systems.
There is also an intercom and a set-up for a security gate, if wanted.
